The Maggie Beer Foundation was established in 2014 to improve the food experiences of older Australians. Since then, we have been providing training courses for cooks and chefs engaged in Aged Care and have been providing recipes and guidance to the providers of Aged Care.
In our experience the food practices vary widely across the sector, from the commendable to the unsatisfactory, as represented in the Four Corners report http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/. The result of poor food practice can be loss of appetite, leading to weight loss and malnutrition.
We welcome the focus brought to this very serious problem by Four Corners and the initiative of the Federal Government to initiate a Royal Commission. We are hopeful that this focus will go a long way towards resolving the problem. We also look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the discussion.
