What’s in season – June

30 June, 2020

Cold store apples of all kinds are still fabulous, Sundowner was the last to be picked and Golden Delicious and Pink Lady are both great varieties for cooking and usually the cheapest too.

Mandarins peel so easily and the skins can be dried overnight in the oven on pilot light and then   whizzed in a food processor, making a fabulous addition to porridge. Oranges and lemons are both tasty, but it’s just a bit early for pink grapefruit. Limes are everywhere, if you don’t have a tree yourself, put an ad in the local paper for anyone who has a lime tree. Tahitian lime crop so heavily, wait till they are turning yellow to pick and you’ll get the best flavour. Also rhubarb, pineapple and papaya are all great at this time of year.

Vegetables to consider are beetroot, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, white and red cabbages, carrot, cauliflower, Jerusalem artichoke, kale, leek, parsnips, sweet potato, swede and silver beet
